Eating Well on a Budget
The cheapest good food in Bali is at warungs, small family-run eateries. The staple is nasi campur ("mixed rice"): a scoop of rice with your choice of vegetables, tempeh, egg, chicken, fish or sate from a display counter. At buffet-style warungs such as Varuna in Canggu, a plate costs roughly IDR 15,000–40,000 (US$0.85–2.25), and a few vegan dishes with rice about IDR 25,000.
- Babi guling: Bali's spit-roast suckling pig. The best-known name is Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka on Jl. Tegal Sari in Ubud, in business since the late 1960s. Recent reviews are mixed (around 3.8 out of 5 on Google), so treat it as a famous name rather than a sure thing. Lunchtime is the usual time to go.
- Ikan bakar or ikan goreng: grilled or fried fish. Warung Mak Beng in Sanur (about IDR 55,000 a set) is the classic.
- How to choose: busy warungs with high turnover keep food fresher. Many accept cash only, so carry small rupiah notes.
- Delivery: GrabFood and GoFood cover most tourist areas.
Dining Tips
- Read the "++": mid-range and upscale menus usually show prices before charges. Bali restaurants add a service charge (typically 5–10%) and then 10% regional restaurant tax (PB1) on top, so the bill is roughly 15.5–21% above menu prices. Some menus state "21% service and government tax" outright. Warungs generally quote final prices.
- Tipping: not expected where service is already charged. At warungs and small cafés, rounding up is appreciated.
- Water: do not drink tap water. Stick to bottled or filtered water.
- Reservations: book Locavore NXT, Mozaic and Apéritif weeks ahead in peak season (July–August and Christmas–New Year). Sunset tables at Sundara and El Kabron also fill early.
- Spice: sambal matah (raw shallot and lemongrass) is the Balinese classic. Ask for "tidak pedas" (not spicy) if you want less heat.
- Dress: smart casual for fine dining; beachwear is fine at warungs and beach cafés.
